Cover to Chapter Four: Caverns of Knowledge
I have started my third chapter to my graphic novel - finally. This will go slow, since I don't have much spare time. But progress nonetheless! This is my latest work, and it is not finished. . . three more spreads to go, as of this posting. Warning - it ends in a cliffhanger. It is just a chapter, after all.
About the time I started this chapter, I got a new iPad Pro, and an apple pencil. I also improved my process, with better gradients and smoother plot progression. Improvement takes time and practice, but it will come.
Title Page
Yes, a chapter doesn't usually get it's own title page. But my first two chapters were first going to be separate comic books, that could later be combined with the other chapters to make a book - so I am keeping to the pattern, even if I never print the separate books. Somehow it feels like a good time for a mystery, characterless page that hints at what is to come. The ribbon comes from Radalus, of course. You'll learn more about him in this story.
Heads in the Clouds
For those who don't know what it's about, the main character is the turquoise robot, and he has made friends with Zendu the warrior cat, Trambite, the indestructible green Kazoon, a singular mythical beast, and Mazardak, a blue monkey pilot. My sons are these characters, and the characters often imitate their real life attitudes.
The purpose of the story is largely to be an outlet and expression for my creativity, and a metaphorical statement about my life.

Also, it is great fun!
The figure on top of the machine is a mysterious evil stowaway. They're taking a monster with them. . .
Lunaculous Appears
I am finding a way to post my first two chapters, complete, online, with interactive buttons and extra notes. That way, anyone who is interested could read what came before this page, in order. It will take some time, but I am excited to have it available anytime online.
I had the whole thing posted on Deviantart.com, but it is hard to view the whole thing, and has no interactivity. This method will be like viewing an interactive pdf online.
Each page has a meaning in the process of creativity. This one represents finding something amazing and unexpected, and pretty much beyond you . . . and the effect it can have to put you in a better direction, inspire you and delight you.
Also, I am getting lots of practice with clouds.
2019 note: As you are viewing this, it is obviously now a website of it's own. Thanks for being patient, if you have waited to see it all together.
Chasing Inspiration
This one is about following something good, that gives you direction, then finding that you can't keep up. You have to change your strategy, if you are uncomfortable, or you are weak, or whatever struggle.
Uendyr and his friends really have no idea where they are going, but the bird gives them a direction that makes some sense.
I find myself trying to improve the art, and make the story clear and sensible. I try my best, knowing that I am short on time, skill and resources, but it's really not about the art or the skill. It's about the underlying meaning. Hopefully it's clear enough.
Letting Go
It's about letting go, sacrificing, because you have to. I put this story together over 30 years ago, but it was full of baggage that didn't work - too many characters with too little to make them interesting. Like paper dolls. No substance. But I was determined to find meaning, and in the process, I had to let go of stuff, compact it, and find what truly worked and was really important to me.
These guys are in the sky, and they're in the precarious position of having nowhere to land, relying on the wind. Which isn't enough to keep up with their humongous guide.
I made an important discovery this week too. I have to go backwards a bit, because book two is long enough to be two books, so I am splitting it in half - Which makes this book 4, not book 3. My wife hates that I don't have all of this nailed down yet. HA HA! That's part of the process - change.
I'm working on a new cover, and the thing is ballooning from the middle - again, this is a complicated process, trying to be creative. Still fun though.
Also, I am very hopeful to get organized, and get all of the 3 books on a website, where they can be viewed at your leisure.
2019 note: As you can tell, I got my wish. It is now online! Including most of this present book/chapter 4!
Racing for the Light Bird
I've been very busy, but I also want to make progress. It isn't very consistent, but I think the art is getting better.
This one is about continuing to go after a goal, even when it has raced away and out of sight. It's making the monkey a little mad. He didn't make his glider to handle this pressure, and he knows it.
Can you take the pressure? Will you go after your goal when you can't see it anymore? Will you finish the race, knowing that you are behind, and you don't even know where the finish line is? Get your monkey riled! Push through to the next page, one more step down.
Cloudbursting Fantasy
So you push through the challenge, and find wonder and discovery on the other side. Get out of your comfort zone for a moment, and you find new and exciting vistas.
Okay, this is more dream than something I really pursue. I used to see creatures and fantasy things in the clouds, or carpet, or stained sheetrock, and I guess I just don't take time to look anymore.
There was something magical about seeing things in abstract texture . . . and something a bit crazy. Don't worry - we're coming to ground soon enough.
Leave it to Trambite, the one most comfortable in the sky, to notice something ahead, through the distractions. (He's the green guy that appears to have a single horn in his head).
First View
And just in time, they find land. Somewhere with more than just sky and sea, with plenty of mystery and wonder and danger. If you make it to a place with plenty of fuel for your creative needs, be ready for anything. Be ready to open your eyes and mind, record the experience, and run.
Did he say Evil City? In a place like this, you can find anything you are looking for. Zendu is looking for monsters, and is likely to find them. Maybe Uendyr will find a princess.
This design was particularly challenging, because I had to hint at an ancient and diverse city, without it seeming modern or too familiar. So I took longer to put it together.
The Flock Divides.
When you are making something cool, you know it has to be made of pieces, that come together to make the whole. You find the best way to put them all together to make your masterpiece. Then you're pleased with your efforts as you watch your bird of paradise perform.
Maybe it's disturbing that this beautiful bird sacrificed itself to show all of it's little bird parts. Don't worry, the bird will reappear in the future, as a whole and beautifully huge brilliant bird.
Mazardak the monkey is right, the ship is in bad shape and they will have to land somehow . . .
The story is going to get more complicated, and fun, I promise!
Mysterious Arrival
I took a long time on this, trying to live my life too, and a lot has been going on. In my first drawings for this chapter, my next page was page one. I wanted to slow the plot and give the white bird more than one panel. Wow, did I expand that moment!
The four (five counting the weird guy) adventurers have arrived at a mysterious, somewhat scary, but nevertheless welcome city, risen from the waves. Is it dramatic enough?
Each of the characters has a different point of view. It means something, I'm not sure what . . .
Foreboding and Preparation
Time to get ready for the trouble, hold on to your valuables and hope for good fortune, because they have arrived, and it looks a little bleak. And wet.
When you finally get started on your creative projects and it's time to prove that you're ready, you may find things stacked against you, and you can just hope for the best.
At least it is finally land . . . but it isn't ready to receive you. When you start your project, the materials are not ready for you, and you may be confused with the new tools, the mysterious surroundings or historical requirements.
Again, it took longer to finish these panels. I changed my methods slightly with changed tools and a larger screen to manage, but I will get used to it. And I am back on track with a story that I originally storyboarded sketches for over 4 years ago. I sent this image to my son Aidan, since he is the blue monkey, and he has the controls of this ship. He loves comics, and this is partially written for and about him. He arrived in Arizona this week, starting his own adventure.
Watch out for that I beam.
The Shroud of Fear
This is a dark one, about getting wrapped up in your fears and needing to face them and find a way through. This shroud was introduced in chapter 2 as one of the monsters coming after my heroes.
If you haven't read the other chapters, don't fear for Trambite - He told Zen when they met that he is an indestructible Kazoon, and he bounced all around the place as a ball in the previous chapters. Zendu just has to hold on tight.
Fitting addition to the story for several coincidences - Halloween was yesterday, and my son Aidan, on a mission, is facing his own fears. I didn't plan the timing, but it seems just right to see Mazardak being brave and adventurous. Each character represents some part of the creative process, and Maz is discovery. I guess he'll soon discover how well he made the ship that is soon to crash . . .
Crash at the Pencil Shrine
My Happy New Year Page! January 2018 is here. This was a hard fought battle of a page. I had to work on this until I could feel good about it, and now on the last day of the year, it is finally done.
Tram and Zen are left behind, and Maz and Uendyr enter the Archive. This is the part in the creative process when you go researching, to find out what has been done, when you look for information. Come with questions, just like Uendyr. Don't worry, the light is always on.
I have enjoyed making this graphic novel immensely, but it seems that I am too busy to get quick progress on it, and there is so much more to tell. I hope to get the whole thing to this point on a website soon, if I can find time. Then it will be easier to read and understand . . . maybe.
Crashing the Knowledge Party
Mazardak and Uendyr enter the building, and find themselves a little small for the place. I made some last minute changes to my sketches for this page, as I have been doing with all of my pages - the first sketch usually doesn't quite work, and I made sketches for this page over 3 years ago.
I like to try to interpret what is going on, but maybe it is obvious, and maybe it annoys people to get reasons fed to them. Don't bother reading this note if you think you understand what is going on, but I have my characters tell so little, since they are new to the place, that it might be just more confusion for every page.
Go looking for information for your creative efforts. This place is like a physical internet, a maze of information and media, but somewhat abandoned looking and forgotten. This is a quick trip, because Maz can't actually steer and choose what to see. Also, hold on tight like Iphi, Mazardak's princess flower. This trip can really take you places!
I love books, but have no time for reading anymore, and get most of my information and entertainment from the internet, so this is a kind of dream internet building.
The Floating Book
My most detailed page, This one is about beginning research. My first job was at a library, and I had a love for the discovery of books. Unfortunately, that made for an awful job, which only lasted 8 months. I was 15, and I kept stopping to look at the books I was supposed to be reshelving.
Research is the next stage of the creative process. Find out all you can about your creative efforts, and this will give you more info to lend believability and context to your process. This creativity thing has been done before, many times, and this is where much has been collected. You might even have an internet connection!
There is structure and order here, and details revealed about that mysterious ghost. Too bad Uendyr and Mazardak can’t get out of their fishbowl. . .
Learning from a Book
Uendyr and Mazardak are riding waves through a library, reading a massive book. Strange thing to experience. There are three different escalators - and they are direct from mall dreams I have had. Then there's an abrupt ending -
I love books and they have had a monumental and profound effect on me, yet I seldom have any time to read anymore. I got my library card updated so that I can listen to audio books, driving my way to work. Really miss reading a real book!
This page is pretty much all new, added to give this interesting place more breathing room and a better fit in the plot.
Rescued from the Pipe
This is where all of my 10,000 awful drawings went when I finished them and determined that there were no reasons to hold onto them anymore. Into a hole in the ground, and flushed out of my mind.
Except that those failures taught me stuff. Those sketches led to these drawings that actually tell my story to a few people.
So it is worth the effort to plan out your creative adventures, and take them somewhere.
Regardless of who else reads this graphic novel, I enjoy making it immensely, and my kids enjoy seeing their character's adventures. And I increased my skills. Just look back at my first book, and the difference is evident, that I am actually learning how to do a graphic novel finally.
This is kinda where I began, characters going into holes in the ground and seeing where they lead. 30 years ago. How it ended up halfway through book 4 is a LONG story.
I did find the writing/dialog part here kinda awkward, but you all know I am not a talker. Hopefully the art experience makes up for their obvious conversations.
For the Ride
This was mostly just fun. It's about using what you have. When you are doing something creative, find the fun in it. Make the most of it!
This is dedicated to Aidan, my monkey. He is away, in a desert place, serving people, and I drew the sketch on the right years ago, but I appreciate, as a parent, now with an older son, who has quite a lot in common with me. Smell the flowers, even if you are in a hurry!
Bog's Arrival
I've been busy lately, and a bit stumped about this page, so it has been a long time coming. It is simpler, but it includes this scroungy new character who I have been drawing for years, Bog Din Yargen. He's like a librarian and a miner and a rodent, all put together. Quite a contrast to the other characters . . .
This is the part of the process where you find someone who knows how to find stuff, to do research for you, or you do the digging yourself. Make friends with encyclopedias and internet searchers and thick books. Get informed.
Next they get to climb inside Bog's chartreuse box. I saw a train once with a chartreuse caboose, and I thought it was so cool, this little box had to be bright green too.
Going Deeper
Another page with Uendyr and Mazardak, following Bog Din Yargen into the depths of the Isle Obscura. It's been such a long time since my last page, I probably lost everyone's interest. It has been a busy summer!
This page is about letting the guide you found lead you, musically, towards knowledge and wisdom and success. There are many mysteries ahead, and you have to be willing to go after them, even in a chartreuse elevator, driven by a hairy beast who loves his rhythms!
People get annoyed with me, because I love tapping out rhythms. Maybe Bog is just lonely or nervous. Maybe his vision is poor and he needs the sound to help him navigate the dark depths. . .
Getting a little lost takes you to new places of discovery.
Rough Motivator Ride
This is the elevator ride deep into the dark mysterious underground. Dig deep, and you might find some very wise ghosts!
This is a sudden departure from the regular straight pages. Reminds me of how a trip is sometimes a jarring change from my regular life, and makes me stand back and see myself from a different point of view. This was a fun one to design with Uendyr and Maz being tossed around while Bog stands calmly driving.
Reminds me of my first job after my mission, collecting trash in the freight elevator at the Church Office Building. We would fill it almost to the ceiling!
We're looking for skilled wise experts, to give us their point of view for our creative efforts. They don't have to be still living either.
Puzzle door in the deep
Every page has become a challenge - The speech bubbles especially are hard, and seem a bit disjointed. I’m not really a writer. Or maybe this is too ambitious . . .
It’s a good thing Uendyr and Mazardak the monkey have a guide . . . He has no trouble getting through this fancy door, deep underground.
At this point in the process, you’re following someone, a guide, who can lead you to information that you can’t find on your own. And you’re very lost, but open minded enough to believe you will find ideas and answers. You may feel a bit dizzy and awkward, until you find your way. Watch your step, and stay close. Further adventure and genius ghosts up ahead! Be tenacious!
Gadget in the Crooked Rooms.
Here is the museum! I love museums! I could wander museums for months, contented.
However, this place came upon me suddenly, and it doesn't serve the story well to get them lost in here, so this will be the lone page of the crooked rooms, stolen from the surface. I could never get enough anyway.
I had a small old camera collection when I was young, with 4 very cool camera gadgets that didn't work at all. When I was much younger, maybe 7, I used to sit in a tub from an old washing machine, in my backyard, and imagine it could fly through the air. I couldn't help myself, and had to include those wonderful memories in this hall of wonders.
The Gatekeeper in the Cavern
I enjoyed this one for the change of pace, color, a new character, a cool, open place to explore. Simple. This is a new place, maybe what you expect deep underground, but also very purple, and looking a bit lived in.  This is about being honest with yourself, and your new acquaintances, when you are looking for information or advice. Also, making friends as needed.
Sometimes it takes a bit of extra effort to get the information  you seek.
Mr. Windbury and the Adepts Club
To put it simply as I can, this is when a creative person finds a source of expert information. It may be ghosts, or old books, or it may be the senior neighbor that did something long ago that relates to what you are trying to do now. I liked the transition from purple caverns to this inviting aqua interior. Connect with history, and you'll get a head start on your own productions.
My son Aidan liked to find haunted places with stories, and it never seemed to scare him at all that there might be ghosts. I'm not as fearless. Seemed like a great time to shoutout to him. Fly on, Monkeyboy!
The carpet is actually a drawing I made in pastel, about 25 years ago. It was an attempt at an outer space map. I scoured through my old drawings, and felt that this fit. I hope the textures add to the experience.
The Ghost Adepts
I promised ghosts and geniuses. Making ghosts takes extra work. Especially genius ones.
This is the part where you find out more history and philosophy and practical skills from those who came before, and left valuable information behind for you to find.
It may have worked better to find actual quotes from these famous people, but the real point is for you to find your own geniuses, that relate directly to your own projects. So these geniuses could really be anyone you admire.
I have admired these gentlemen at various times of my life, and others, usually authors, who come somewhat to life as I read their writings. There isn't room in the Adept's Club for all of my heroes . . . Who would your heroes be, that have shared their treasures with you?
Deep Conversations
Finally, geniuses to ask questions . . . But they may not answer you, and they may frighten you. Progress isn’t always in leaps, and may need your patience. It’s good to seek positive thoughts and persistent willingness to go forward.
This is more speech bubbles than I normally like. Dialog isn’t my strength, but I tackled it anyway. Needs work, but at least it’s moving forward.
These were some of my influences intellectually when I was young, or names I’ve heard many times, and wanted to learn more about them. Follow genius, and you’ll find creativity.
Do you recognize any of them?
The Ghost Parade
This is the most complicated page I have done, and it has taken two months. Besides being busy, and going to Europe, I also struggle with the most people in one page, and I had to redraw a few times. It is close, but many of the figures are pretty undeveloped. This page, like many that came before, is an experiment. I pushed my skill boundaries immensely, and ran into problems. The crowd is not in correct size perspective, and I can see it now. It is unclear what they are doing here, or where they are going. Enough complaints. I always said this would be a challenge, and my reach is longer than my skills. I departed from my standard procedure a bit, using a newly learned vector program, Adobe Draw, on my iPad Pro, to draw some of the crowd, while I sat on a plane coming home from Sweden. It saved time, but I struggled a bit.
We see the familiar Paper, Steamboat and Train giants, plus a famous poet and playwright, a musical instrument inventor, and a space explorer of epic proportions. . . Many great accomplishments that are now in the past. It is a gathering of styles and points of view and going in many different directions. I'm not going to try to interpret it completely, but obviously there is a lot to look at and consider.
I had to include the marching band that Bog Din Yargen performs with. This is the last chance. My sons have all been in marching band, and so was I.
Where are your giants and heroes? Which amazing people have you heard of or met, or maybe not discovered yet? Maybe you can learn something from what they left behind. They are from every continent and every time, they were masters of every skill and they have treasures of knowledge and creativity to share!
Beauty in the Upside-Down Commissary.

One of Uendyr’s quests is to find beauty . . . Is it here? There’s ornate antique weapons, paintings, ancient treasures, a young princess in pink with long flowing hair, golden jewelry and clothing with engraved golden . . . parts. Maz the monkey even finds his floating backpack to be a thing of beauty!

What is beauty for? It can get your attention, certainly, if it is YOUR kind of beauty. In this place, the purpose is practical. Find something beautiful to enjoy in your journey.

They are still deep underground, with a long way to go. Ugly little Bog is still their guide, and very suited to the task. Beauty isn’t everything.
Where did Mazardak’s beautiful plant get to?
Junk on the Ancient Road
This is a last ditch deep search through the old, varied internal universe, while discussing the complex options in further search for a lost princess. If you are following along with your own creative actions, this point in the process is when you sort through your archive of old ideas, looking for forgotten gems.

This page took me a wopping 3 months to finish, and it still feels unfinished. That’s the nature of making such busy stories.
I added Easter eggs from my own unfinished projects. I put in a token bottle, a nod to my long lost mini bottle collection, and to my father-in-law, who used to dig for old unbroken bottles with his neighbor. There’s a ball ship that I dreamt of flying around in, and the huge building that I drew in MS Paint when I was 22, floor by floor. I used to want to be an architect, but my dreams were too big for me to be practical.

My efforts of representing this big place are challenged by the scale, complexity and line width. The characters are shrunk and isolated and overwhelmed by this deep and wide expanse. I learned new techniques with Sketchbook pro, and I reveled in the new painterly feeling. Also, I love caves, and learned a lot researching cave formations. Next, we’re on to the surprise ending. My wife will hate it.
Mysterious and Abrupt
I know, this is a cliffhanger. Yes, that is a giant skeleton-robot, wearing the Shroud of Fear as a cape, who they apparently haven't seen yet. Lots of questions will now have to wait for resolution, as this is the last page of the chapter.
My questions? What is the light source, and how was it suddenly obscured so quickly?
Where is Ipheona, Mazardak's floral princess?
Can Uendyr do something with that device he found, that has yet to show how amazing and useful a tool it is?
How can I make the final art for my next chapter faster? Change of style?
No, this is not a clean ending that wraps all the details up nicely. Sometimes you get creative in the dark, without any clear directions. History reveals itself a little at a time, and without perfect clarity. Light is hope, and you find a way to keep it lit, so you can keep up your spirits, and keep going. Patience and perserverance are required here. Keep digging, and discovering as you go. Answers are still to come in the rest of the chapters!
Now for an extended break, then to Chapter 5: Detour Tales.
